How to keep delegating

Some managers still believe that the best way to get something done is to do it themselves. But, with this attitude, no matter how productive they think they are, at some point they will reach their limit. Beyond that point, their output will decrease and their stress level will increase. As well, the talent and potential of their staff will be ignored. In a nutshell, to ignore delegation is to mismanage. If you want to embrace delegation as a most effective management tool, consider these strategies...

1. Become delegation-conscious.

Have you really decided which of your tasks you could rightly delegate to your subordinates to complete? Spend a day or two considering what you do. Are there things only you can do? Are there things others could do? Who could do those? Would they need training? Sometimes your subordinates are better qualified than you are to answer these questions. You might be surprised how much of your own work can be delegated.

2. Stop postponing projects.

We all have tasks that we continually postpone or ignore for some reason - yet they will not go away. At some stage they have to be done. If you are in this predicament, you must learn to delegate such tasks to other people to complete and free yourself to get on with other things.

3. Stop taking work home.

All occupations have their peak periods when additional work loads necessitate your taking work home to complete. But, if you find yourself taking work home regularly, you need to question the effectiveness of your delegating skills.
