A gripe is an informal complaint, which, if not dealt with appropriately, may soon become a grievance.

A grievance is a formal complaint which usually is based upon the violation of company policy.

Talk to them, ask for their opinion, praise their work - and you will usually satisfy their need for attention and give them less reason to complain. …
