While coaching styles are likely to differ, there are several criteria generally associated with effective coaching. The following list, in no particular order of importance, identifies those criteria.

• Being an effective listener—really hearing what the other person is saying (and not saying).
• Facilitating problem-solving—rather than trying to give the answers.

• Giving accurate instructions—removing or eliminating any confusion about what’s required.
