How to get the most out of temps

The trend towards smaller permanent staffs began in the 1980s and has become standard practice in many large companies. They reason as follows: Why pay wages, benefits, and perks to people who are only needed at peak periods or in emergencies?

Companies source their non-permanent staff from three labour pools:

  • On-call workers - for example, former employees, retirees, or redundants known by the company to possess the required skills, and called on when needed from a company database.
  • Contract workers - sourced from firms who sell their specialised services to other companies, usually on projects of several months’ duration, e.g. engineers, legal staff, salespeople, managers.
  • Temps - hired from agencies to handle special projects, or to replace sick or vacationing staff for periods of a few days to several months.

Temps are not put on your payroll. Your company pays the temp agency a fee for each employee, and the agency pays the workers. Although this fee is higher than the amount you would pay a regular employee, it is cost effective because you pay no benefits to temps and you also eliminate the high cost of recruiting for a short duration job. …
